GUERNEVILLE NEWS | ORIGINAL LOCAL NEWS · OCTOBER 2026
Sonoma Resource Conservation District filed a new forest-management environmental notice October 8, 2026 for private land near Sweetwater Springs Road in Guerneville. The Hernandez Project is part of the North Bay Forest Improvement Program and focuses on reducing selected small-diameter trees and accumulated woody material across two adjoining parcels.
What the official record establishes
The agency describes forests of redwood, Douglas-fir, hardwoods and oak savanna on terrain ranging from level to steep. The treatment includes thinning smaller trees, pruning and managing slash through chipping, mastication or controlled piles. The filing specifies watercourse buffers and further review by a registered professional forester or qualified biologist before work occurs near certain streams.
Public-interest questions
The project is a private-property forestry proposal reviewed under an environmental exemption, not an announcement of logging throughout Guerneville or the removal of all mature redwoods. The district says treatments are designed to avoid removal of healthy mature or scenic trees and reduce excessive fuel loading. Actual work, smoke-producing activities and closures require site-specific scheduling and permissions.
Next reporting steps
Residents can examine the CEQA filing and ask the project administrator about timing, smoke management, watercourse precautions and monitoring. Guerneville News will use subsequent field reports and agency records to distinguish planned treatments from completed work.
